About this test

This test measures high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), a protein produced by your liver that rises with inflammation. It is commonly used as a marker for general inflammation and, at high sensitivity, for the lower-level, longer-term inflammation that has been linked to cardiovascular risk factors. The test measures this one marker only and does not identify the underlying cause of any raised result.

Among the hs-CRP tests we track, this one is priced at £39, the same as Medichecks' CRP (High Sensitivity) Blood Test, and cheaper than YorkTest's and Forth's equivalents at £41 and Thriva's at £45. Better2Know also sells what appears to be a clinic-based version measuring the same single marker, its Heart Disease and Inflammation Test, at £135, considerably more than this home kit.

The test scores well for collection convenience, since it can be done entirely at home with a finger-prick sample and results are available within one working day. It scores around the middle for value for money, despite matching the lowest price we track, and only moderately for results and follow-up because results are not reviewed by a doctor as standard.

Who is it for?

This is a sensible choice if you want to check your hs-CRP level from home without paying clinic prices, since it is one of the cheapest single-marker hs-CRP tests we track, tied with Medichecks at £39.

If you would rather have a clinician take a venous blood sample for the same marker, Better2Know's own Heart Disease and Inflammation Test appears to measure the same single biomarker for £135, considerably more than this home kit.

How it works

You collect a small blood sample at home using the finger-prick lancets provided in the kit, following the enclosed instructions, then post it to Better2Know's laboratory in the prepaid envelope supplied. If ordered before 4pm on a weekday, the kit is dispatched the same day. Results are available within one working day of the sample reaching the laboratory and are uploaded to your secure online patient area. Results are not reviewed by a doctor as standard, though Better2Know says you should consult a doctor if your CRP level is above average, and can arrange a private consultation.
