About this test

This test looks for hepatitis B alone, using a blood sample usually taken by finger prick. It sits in our hepatitis B comparison group alongside seven other single-marker hepatitis B tests, so as a single-infection check it is measuring exactly what it sets out to; depth is not really the point of this kind of test.

At £185, it is the most expensive test in its comparison group by some margin. The cheapest options are LloydsPharmacy's hepatitis B immunity test at £43 and two Blue Horizon tests around £45, with Medichecks around £55 to £59. Better2Know's own postal Hepatitis B Immunity and Hepatitis B sAg home kits are each £70, meaning the instant clinic version costs £115 more for the same single marker.

The scores are consistent with this: clinical depth scores reasonably because a single marker fits the purpose of this test type, clarity is strong given the detailed listing, but value for money is weak given how far above the group median this sits. Results and follow-up score lower because a doctor does not review results as standard. Better2Know is CQC registered, holds a 4.2 Trustpilot score from 775 reviews, and has been trading since 2008.

Who is it for?

This suits someone who wants a same-day, in-person hepatitis B result and does not mind paying for that speed. If price matters more, Better2Know's own Hepatitis B Immunity Home Test Kit and Hepatitis B sAg Home Test Kit each cost £70, and Medichecks and Blue Horizon offer postal single-marker hepatitis B tests from around £45, all considerably cheaper than this £185 instant version.

How it works

A small blood sample is taken, usually by finger prick, and applied to a test cassette at the clinic. Better2Know states results are available from around 20 minutes after the sample is taken, and you receive a signed results report on the day. If the result is reactive, the provider says a further confirmatory blood sample is taken and sent to the lab, included in the price, and a referral is arranged if that confirms positive, rather than every result going through a doctor review as standard.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Checks hepatitis B specifically from a small finger-prick blood sample.
  • Result is ready in around 20 minutes rather than being posted later.
  • A reactive result includes free confirmatory lab testing rather than an extra charge.

Cons

  • At £185, this costs more than double the typical price for comparable single-marker hepatitis B tests.
  • Better2Know's own postal Hepatitis B home kits cover the same marker for £70, well below this instant version.
  • Results are not reviewed by a doctor as standard.

Our editorial score

Compare Health Test Score Costliest single hepatitis B check against its peers
Editorial confidence: 9.5/10

Hepatitis B is the sole marker here, checked from a blood sample with a result given at the clinic the same day. At £185 it is more than double the group median of about £79 for comparable single-marker hepatitis B tests, and over £100 more than Better2Know's own postal Hepatitis B Immunity and sAg home kits, both £70. The trade-off is a same-day, in-person result rather than a cheaper postal test.
