There are many different kinds of bacteria that can cause infection. Knowing what kind of bacteria is causing your infection is necessary so doctors can prescribe the right antibiotic treatment. Sometimes, it is not clear what kind of bacteria is causing the infection and that is when a Swab for Culture test is required. This test will swab the area of concern to collect a sample of material and bacteria for analysis. This sample is then sent to our laboratory where it is spread onto a small glass dish and over a few days, any bacteria in the sample will grow and multiply into larger colonies that can then be identified. This Culture technique is widely used to grow many different species of bacteria to help doctors identify the cause of infection and prescribe the right antibiotics.
If you have a cut, wound, other lesion or unusual discharge, you should consider a Swab for Culture test. This test is particularly useful if you have already tested for a specific infection and the test came back negative, but you still have the infection. The Swab for Culture test will enable the infecting bacteria to grow in the laboratory where it can be correctly identified and the best antibiotic for treating it can be established. Symptoms of a bacterial infection can include:
Redness around your wound, which spreads or streaks
Pain, tenderness or other discomforts
Swelling or warmth
Pus oozing from or surrounding your wound
Swollen lymph nodes
Delayed healing of your injury
The Better2Know Swab for Culture test requires only a swab sample. The swab sample is collected using a simple device with a cotton tip for collecting the sample.
