What is the Uric Acid, Gout and Kidney Stones test?

This test measures the level of uric acid in your blood. Uric acid is a natural waste product created when your body breaks down substances called purines. Purines are found naturally in your body and in certain foods such as red meat, liver, sardines, anchovies, and beer.

If uric acid levels become too high, crystals can form in your joints, causing a painful condition known as gout. These crystals can also collect in your kidneys, leading to kidney stones.

This test is often recommended for:

What are the symptoms that may prompt this test?

How does the Uric Acid test work?

This test requires a blood sample, which can be taken at one of our clinics or using a home nurse visit kit. The sample is sent to our accredited laboratory for analysis.

This test measures:

• Uric Acid - a waste product formed from the breakdown of purines. Elevated levels may indicate a higher risk of gout or kidney stone formation.

What can I expect at my appointment?

At your clinic appointment, a trained healthcare professional will take a blood sample quickly and safely. Your blood sample will then be returned to our laboratory for quick and accurate analysis.

Your results are typically available within two days of your sample arriving at our laboratory. You will be notified when your results are ready and you will be able to access them securely in your online Patient Area.

Are there any risks with this test?

This is a routine blood test and is very safe. Most people experience only mild discomfort during the blood draw.

Minor bruising or tenderness at the site may occur, but serious complications are extremely rare.
