Screening Test for Pernicious Anaemia
1 biomarker as listed by Blue Horizon Medicals.
This vacutainer blood test is often requested when Vitamin B12 is thought or known to be low. The cause may be down to the presence of autoantibodies, which inactivate intrinsic factor (IF). Absorption from the gut of Vitamin B12 depends upon the presence of IF, so a loss of this factor will eventually result in B12 deficiency. This failure to absorb vitamin B12 is the most common cause of adult vitamin B12 deficiency, which if severe is known as Pernicious Anaemia. Often requested at the same time is a test for Gastric Parietal Cell Antibodies.
