About this test

This test measures thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free T4 and free T3, the three hormones that make up a standard thyroid function panel, plus TPO antibodies, which can indicate whether an underactive thyroid is likely to be caused by autoimmune disease.

Against the 14 tests in our advanced thyroid comparison group, this is the cheapest option, with a comparison-group median of £87.50 against its £42 price. It does carry fewer markers than some of the pricier peers, which test five or six markers rather than four, so it is a good fit if antibody testing is the main thing you want without paying for extras.

The scores reflect this trade-off. It scores strongly on value for money and on trust signals, helped by Monitor My Health's Trustpilot rating and its use of a UKAS ISO 15189 accredited NHS lab (Exeter Clinical Laboratory) that is CQC registered. It loses a little ground on clinical depth for having fewer markers than the group median, though clarity and collection convenience both score well, and results come with a doctor's review.

Who is it for?

This suits anyone with possible thyroid symptoms, such as unexplained weight change, tiredness or a fast heart rate, who wants TPO antibody testing included rather than just the three core hormones. If you specifically want a deeper panel with more markers, peers such as Thriva's Advanced thyroid function blood test (£80.10, six markers) or Selph's Advanced Thyroid Test (£87, six markers) test more, at roughly double the price.

How it works

You collect a finger-prick blood sample at home and post it to Monitor My Health's laboratory, ideally Monday to Thursday to avoid weekend delays. The sample is analysed on a Roche Cobas e801 analyser, and results are typically available within 1 to 2 days of the lab receiving it. A doctor reviews the results and provides a written interpretation, including whether to see your GP if anything falls outside the expected range.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Includes TPO antibodies alongside the three core thyroid hormones (TSH, FT4, FT3).
  • Cheapest test in our 14-test advanced thyroid comparison group.
  • Results are reviewed by a doctor as standard.
  • Turnaround of 1 to 2 days once the lab receives your sample.

Cons

  • Four markers, fewer than the five or six markers tested by several pricier peers.
  • Does not test thyroglobulin antibodies alongside TPO.
  • Monitor My Health does not show what the results report looks like before you buy.
