What is an HbA1c test?

A private HbA1c blood test provides insights into your average blood sugar levels over the last two to three months. It is used to diagnose pre-diabetes and type 2 diabetes and to monitor blood sugar levels in people living with diabetes.

An HbA1c test measures the percentage of glycated haemoglobin in your blood. Glycated haemoglobin is produced when the sugar in your blood sticks to your red blood cells. Your body cannot use this sugar, so it builds up in your blood. This can cause diabetes and diabetes-related complications, such as problems with your eyes and feet. It can also put you at increased risk of other health conditions like stroke and heart disease.

People living with diabetes should have an HbA1c blood test at least annually, but some may need more regular checks if their blood sugar level readings are too high.

What does a private HbA1c test involve?

The amount of HbA1c formed is related to the average concentration in your bloodstream. As red blood cells live for two to three months, the test provides an indication of your blood sugar levels over that time.
