About this test
How can our Thyroid Blood Test help you?
You can think of your thyroid gland as your body's thermostat. Thyroid problems can affect your mood, appetite, gut, weight or skin - amongst many other things.
Our Thyroid Blood Test checks your thyroid hormones which can tell you if you have an underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism) thyroid.
Why upgrade to an Advanced Thyroid Test?
The standard Thyroid Blood Test checks the two main thyroid hormones, thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine (T4), which are all we need to say if you have an under- or over-active thyroid gland.
However, if you'd like a more in-depth assessment of your thyroid gland you should upgrade to our Advanced Thyroid Test.
This advanced thyroid profile adds free T3 and total T4 levels as well as the thyroid antibodies thyroglobulin and thyroperoxidase. These additional markers can help diagnose autoimmune thyroid conditions such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis or Graves' disease.
What are the symptoms of thyroid disease?
Symptoms of thyroid disease include:
- Weight loss or weight gain
- Increased or decreased appetite
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Tiredness and fatigue
- Heavy or irregular periods
- Changes in mood like irritability or depression
- Dry skin and / or hair
What should I do to prepare for the Thyroid Blood Test?
- do not take biotin containing supplements for 2 days.
- take your sample in the morning before breakfast if possible (first thing is best).
- if you take thyroid hormone replacement, it's best to take your dose after sampling if possible.
Who should not use the Thyroid Blood Test?
We do not recommend using this test panel if you:
- are a child (17 years or under) without supervision from an adult
- are feeling acutely unwell - e.g. with a cold or flu or if you have new-onset (i.e. within the last few days) symptoms.
