About this test

This screen tests a finger-prick blood sample and a urine sample for seven infections: HIV (including the early p24 antigen marker), hepatitis B, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, mycoplasma and ureaplasma. Testing for both blood-borne and urine-detectable infections in one kit means you do not need to work out which individual tests to book if you are unsure what you might have been exposed to.

Within its comparison group of standard STI screens, this kit tests for more infections than every peer we compare it against, including Better2Know's own four-infection FAST TRACK kit at £170. That breadth comes at a cost: at £199 it is priced above every other screen in the group, from LloydsPharmacy's £59.95 four-infection test up to London Medical Laboratory's £189 six-infection panels.

The score reflects that trade-off. It does well for clinical depth because of its infection count, and for collection convenience because it can be done entirely from home with a five-day turnaround, or at a clinic for £295. It scores lower for value for money given the group's cheaper alternatives, and lower still for results and follow-up because results are not reviewed by a doctor as standard.

Who is it for?

This suits people who are not sure exactly what they should be tested for and want one broad screen covering most common infections in a single home kit, without needing a clinic appointment. It is also a reasonable option if you specifically want the p24 antigen HIV marker or hepatitis B and syphilis included alongside the more commonly tested chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

If price matters more than breadth, LloydsPharmacy's 4-in-1 kit at £59.95 or Forth's Standard STI Test Kit at £79 cover the four most common infections for a fraction of the cost, and Better2Know's own FAST TRACK Four Screen at £170 is a cheaper four-infection option from the same provider.

How it works

You take a finger-prick blood sample and a urine sample at home, then post both to the lab, with results back within five days. A clinic appointment is also offered for £295 if you would rather have someone take the samples. Results are not reviewed by a doctor as standard, though Better2Know arranges a doctor consultation if a result comes back positive.

Pros & cons

Pros

  • Screens for seven infections, more than every test we compare it with, including HIV, hepatitis B and syphilis as well as chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
  • Combines a finger-prick blood sample and a urine sample so multiple infection types are covered from one kit.
  • Can be done entirely at home, with a five-day turnaround from sample to result.
  • A clinic appointment is available for £295 if you would prefer a professional to take the samples.

Cons

  • At £199 it costs more than every comparable STI screen we found, including Better2Know's own four-infection kit at £170.
  • Results are not reviewed by a doctor as standard; a consultation only follows a positive result.
  • Requires both a blood sample and a urine sample, so there are two collection steps rather than one.
