About this test

The Core Blood Test measures 16 biomarkers: cholesterol and lipids, kidney function (creatinine, eGFR, urea), liver function (ALT, ALP, GGT, albumin), thyroid hormones (TSH and free T4), total testosterone and vitamin D. That combination is designed to give a general check across several organ systems without going as deep as Numan's 20-marker Complete Blood Test.

Against the eight comparable essential health checks we found, this test measures fewer markers than YorkTest's Essential Health Check (18) and Blue Horizon Medicals' Fingerprick Wellman and Wellwoman tests (20 each), yet costs more than all of them, which are priced between £49 and £82.25. Set against the wider group of 32 essential health tests we track, however, its £88 price sits well below the £113 median, which is reflected in a strong value for money score.

clarity and documentation scores well thanks to a clear biomarker list, collection options and turnaround time, though the report format itself is not described. The standard doctor review supports a solid results and follow-up score.

Who is it for?

This suits you if you want a broad but not exhaustive general health check and are happy to pay a bit more for Numan's collection options and doctor review. It's a reasonable middle ground between Numan's smaller single-focus tests and its full 20-marker Complete Blood Test.

If you want more markers, Blue Horizon Medicals' Fingerprick Wellman or Wellwoman tests cover 20 for £82.25, £5.75 less than this test. If budget matters most, Monitor My Health's Essential Health Screen covers nine markers for £49.

How it works

You collect the sample at home with a finger-prick kit, or a Tasso+ upper-arm device for an extra £10. The sample is processed at Numan's UKAS ISO 15189 accredited partner labs, with results typically ready in 3 to 5 days and a doctor reviewing your results before you receive them.

Pros & cons

  • Blue Horizon Medicals tests 20 markers, four more, for £5.75 less.
  • Does not include blood sugar (HbA1c) or vitamin B12, unlike Numan's Complete Blood Test.
